Mentor Meeting 1- Tyler Sigler

Over a month ago, I took a mission trip to Loskop, South Africa. On the trip were 9 of my close friends and two leaders who had played football and graduated from Wheaton College in the past. While on the trip, I became close with one of our leaders, Freddy Ellis. Once returning to campus, I asked Freddy if he could mentor me, not really knowing what exactly it was that he did. I met with him two weekends ago in the city, as he took me to his crossfit gym. We worked out together, then talked for awhile about how he decided to work in the field he did, and why he decided to do so. Freddy grew up in Texas before coming to Wheaton. His dad, a successful pharmaceutical sales rep, inspired his son to go into the business program here. Although Freddy only found a few key classes really beneficial during his time here at Wheaton, he really enjoyed attending Wheaton and playing football. As I have begun to figure out what exactly it is that the Lord has planned for me after graduating in December, I think he has placed Freddy in my life to help me do so. Freddy helped start a real estate program at Hope Academy, a private charter school in Chicago. After working to help start that for four years, Freddy left to work at J.P. Morgan Chase, in outside sales. But, after only 6 months of working there, Freddy knew that it wasn't for him. While in college, he and one of his close friends had always dreamed of starting up their own company. They had even made a business plan, thinking that some day once they had enough experience, they would branch out and chase after some idea.  And sure enough, that is exactly what Freddy is doing now. He has begun his career as his own boss, as an "entrepreneur." And he has really inspired me to do the same. That regardless of what exactly it is that I feel the Lord calling me to, that I need to somewhat risk it all and chase after it all. Freddy has become extremely successful, as he is the co-founder of Watermark Properties, a real estate development company based out of Naperville. Freddy loves what he does, and inspires me to do the same. He told me that some nights he has trouble falling asleep, because he gets so excited to go back to work the next day. They're company is growing rapidly, and Freddy is loving it. I have set another time to meet with him, and I will continue to ask questions and find out more as to exactly how he is motivated to love what he does so much.

  1. Tyler,

Great post. I've heard lots about Freddy and he seems like a great guy. No question he has ton of valuable experience and insight in regard to business entrepreneurship. It's awesome that you found somebody like him to mentor you, especially since you both have many of the same interests. I also think its awesome how you are leaning on the Lord for guidance as you are beginning the next step of your life and start of your career.

  2. Tyler,

That's great to hear that you've found a mentor that has walked the path you're currently excavating. It's excited to hear the story of someone who pursued a lofty goal and are currently living out what they dreamed several years back. This is a testament that if you put your heart into something, and lean on God while do so, that anything is possible. I encourage you to dream big Tyler, God will help you get there.

  3. Tyler,

As one of the nine who attend Africa with you I can definitely say how awesome of a man Freddy is. He's a man who is passionate about his work, but is grounded in his faith and knows his purpose here on this earth. It has been great seeing you grow this year and I am excited to see you explore your interests. Keep pursuing what your passionate about and keep God at the center and he will guide you.

  4. Tyler,

You know I went to South Africa freshman year with Freddy so I know how awesome of a guy he is. It sounds to me reading this and how you've told me about it outside of class that God has placed someone in your life at just the right time to help you answer some of your questions and inspire you to go do something you love. I think that's an incredible blessing. Love you brother.

  5. Tyler,

It's crazy to think how much our plans will probably change after leaving college. It's good to know that it may take trying out a couple of things to realize what we really enjoy doing and really suites us. It must be awesome to be that excited to get to work the next day. I hope your continued relationship with Freddy is a beneficial one and I trust that God will lead you to just the right career.

  6. Tyler,

Freddy is an awesome dude because he's from the one and only, Keller, Texas. It sounds awesome that you've found a mentor that is helping you find the answer to one of probably the biggest questions and decisions of your life. I am excited to see what you choose to do after school and watch you grow for years to come. Love you brother.

  7. Tyler,
I think that you found a mentor that has so much experience in the business world. He sounds like he has gone through some important transitions and it sounds like he also had to make some big decisions. I feel like he is a mentor you could glean a lot of information from. I really think having a mentor who has experienced a lot of different things in the are you want to work in is extremely helpful!
