Mentor #3- Larson

In the last meeting with my dad for our mentorship we had another great talk that had a range of different topics. We talked about the last two weeks of school, what will come when school ends, and a asked a few more questions about the business.
The first thing I did was told my dad how excited I was to have school be done with, but how I'm still nervous for what this summer has in store. We talked about how crazy it is to think that i'm already half way through college and the amount of growth we've seen in each other since first arriving at college. I still haven't found a summer job but my dad has continued to encourage me that a good opportunity will arise. We talked about how the planning for my sister's wedding is going and how excited we both are for someone to join our family. I also mentioned how leaving school is exciting but at the same time its sad because you leave your friends behind and its not very easy to take trips to visit.
The business questions I asked my dad ranged from a variety of topics. I started off by asking him, if there is a way for him to tell if the business will have a good year or a bad year? He replied by saying if they have a hot summer then they know they'll probably get good business in the summertime and if its a cold winter then they'll do great in the winter months. I next moved on to asking my dad how they handle having someone move on from the company that they wish would stay. He told me that they try to be excited for them and if they end on good terms that they always offer them a job back with them, if they ever find themselves looking for a job.
This project really helped me find out more about my dad as a business leader and as a father, and person. It was interesting to see the ways that he's handled situations and how he's changed in the 25 years of experience he has.

  1. Stephen,
I encourage you to keep up this mentoring aspect of your relationship with your father. He is an invaluable resource to you and can really help you grow professionally. I thought it was kind of funny that your dad can tell if he will have a good season by how hot or cold the weather will be. Keep searching for that summer job because I know you will find something great.

  2. Stephen,

This is great that you and your dad are able to have such an open and honest relationship with each other. Having a good relationship with your Dad is especially good for navigating life and other things that inevitably come up. Glad to here that you're actively looking for things to do over the summer. The weather tip is a good piece of advice for predicting how well a business is going to do for the year. Keep it up!

  3. Stephen, I really like how your mentor is your dad. As I have mentioned in previous blog post replies, I really like how being both a father and a mentor brings something special to that relationship. It's also really great that you are able to learn about subjects relating to business through him. You're able to get some really great information from such an invaluable resource.
