Gierke Post 2

For my second mentor meeting with my father I called him and I asked him the key to success of his business. He first told me that there is no quick easy answer to that question, but he said "you have to do what you're going to say you're going to do when and how you said you would do it." Otherwise whoever you are doing the work for will not be pleased and give you anymore of their business. This is an interesting concept for a fishing guide to follow through on, because it is entirely possible for him to do every single thing correctly, but if the fish aren't biting then you can't catch any fish.

As you could imagine that puts a great deal of pressure on my father to make sure that they are catching fish, so he can please the customers as much as he can. He said with over 20 years of experience on the river the times that he doesn't catch any fish at all are very rare on guide trips. But that did bring up another important point, which was that consistency is key for business' to succeed. Consistently delivering on promises builds a certain amount of trust between the company and the consumers. He said instead of the customer only having one interaction to judge the company on, they have your entire body of work to base their judgement upon. My father has many customers that come back year after year with his fishing guide company, and even more consistent contracts with his environmental demolition inspection company including VIET USA, Bolligs & Sons, and Kreuger Excavating.  On top of this, one thing I know that sets his fishing guide business apart is his position on the Rapala Pro Staff. On top of his 20+ years of expertise he has the prestigious role of being a part of the Rapala Pro Staff, this just adds to the credibility of the company and the trust between company and consumer.

  2. Hey Max, it's cool that your dad is able to model for you what a man of integrity looks like. The idea of consistency is another interesting one because it means that success is a steady event as opposed to a momentary one. I hope you can continue to have many great conversations with your dad!

  3. The advise he gave you was pretty insightful. Ill have to remember that for myself. In the business world you are constantly working with others and having to make good, long lasting impressions which can either make or break your career. To be consistent and bring the same care and experience to everyone you interact with is what is key to keeping the customers coming back. You dad has great advise and there is not wonder why his business has been so successful for so long.
