Jeremiah Yi blog post 1

On February 18, 2017, I had my first meeting with my mentor, Rick Huffman. I first met Rick, the
assistant tennis coach, at the beginning of the school year when I started tennis practice. Throughout
the tennis season, I have been privileged enough to practice with him every day and travel to many
matches with him. During our first meeting, it was generally a time where we just got to know each
other. We talked over dinner at Portillos and it was just an awesome time of communion. We talked
about our families and I learned that he had played college tennis and had a rather large family. We
discussed my family and how my family has been moving around a lot for the past 10 years. After
discussing our families, we talked about tennis and our favorite players and our predictions for the
upcoming grand slam.
He then asked me what I was studying in college and I told him that I was planning on
graduating with a major in business and economics. He asked me why I had chosen that specific major and I told him that I had also enjoyed the business aspect of life and had enjoyed handling money. We talked a little bit more about what interests me and I told him that I have always liked handling numbers and balancing check books and what not. He showed a lot of interest in what I was saying and it really helped me to get all my thoughts out into the air. Talking things out with Rick helped me get real world career ideas. Not only did our talk help me get career ideas, it also helped me eliminate some of the plans I was already making. Rick was able to give me his input on some of the career choices I already had in my mind.
Overall, I think that this was a great first meeting. Although I did know Rick before this instance,
this meeting helped me learn different things about him and allowed this mentor/mentee relationship
to start.
