Mentor Meeting #2

I called my dad this past Saturday to give him a bit of an update on school and for him to give me an update on home, work while I've been gone. The conversation started off with me telling him how I'm starting to stress over finding a good summer job. My dad has always encouraged me to try working for different companies to get a sense of what kind of business I would be interested in. After applying to numerous internships, I either didn't hear back from them, or after a round of interviews they told me they had decided on a different candidate. I told my dad how I was frustrated with companies wanting you to have experience for hiring after college, how few seemed to actually give you the chance for a job. My dad told me to stay focused and that it wouldn't be the end of the world and suggested finding a factory job for the summer to possibly get an in with a bigger company, for opportunities next summer. Taking his advice I've applied to a couple of companies back home and have gotten interview opportunities with a few of them.
I also briefly asked my dad a few questions about how the business. One was finding out how the 2008 economic crisis effected the business and how they handled it. Finding out how hard it was to keep business the same was something I never really thought about while growing up in that time. I also asked my dad how they know what kind of employees they are looking for. It was very insightful to find out about the characteristics they look for in their employees.
Overall it was another good talk and fun to find out more about the business and life outside the business.
