My most recent meeting with Mitch took place last week as we got lunch in Saga again. The main portion of our conversation consisted of me seeking understanding of the book of Ecclesiastes because I am writing a paper for my Old Testament class about the theme of this book. At first glance, Ecclesiastes is a bit of an uncomfortable and depressing read because it talks about how everything on earth is futile, and that everything we do on earth is a "chasing of the wind". However after discussing and re-reading the book with Mitch, it was clear to me that the book is arguing that the only thing that matters is a relationship with Christ and relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ. I found this lesson very convicting, and as I reflected I often find myself worrying so deeply about the things of this world that in the end truly do not matter instead of my relationship with the Lord and my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Mason,
ReplyDeleteSo much truth in your post! It's awesome that you have a mentor who you can read scripture with and identify deeper meanings through reading it. So much truth in the fact that our relationships with Christ and other believers are crucial. Also really happy to hear how you are able to grasp the scriptures and analyze it at such a deep level.
Hi Mason,
ReplyDeleteCollege is incredibly busy and it's so easy to prioritize academics, extracurriculars and career plans over our relationship w/ God and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. The book of Ecclesiastes is a helpful reminder of the temporary nature of our existence and the importance of living a life that is built around relationships.
Thanks for sharing Mason,
David
Mason,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. I think its really great that you were able to sit down and dissect the book of Ecclesiastes with Mitch! Its good to practice reading scripture and figuring out its true message, and more often than not, the message is convicting and satisfying. Good luck on your paper!
