My past meeting with My dad was at the beginning of this week. My dad and I spent some time talking about the importance of spending time with family and God. Life can get busy and stressful and a lot of times I can find myself cutting out time with family and God when the business of life seems to take over. My dad has been an example throughout my life of someone that puts God and family over and job he has ever had. I have been able to witness and appreciate that.
As stated in one of my earlier posts my dad and I predicted the Bulls to go 0-4 after Rondo got hurt. The bulls are 0-3 with another game coming up tomorrow. I hope they prove me and my dad wrong but I have little faith in their ability to win another game.
My dad and I also discussed politics a little bit and talked about free speech. With recent events regarding University of California at Berkeley, Americas right to free speech seems to be under attack. My dad encouraged me to have diversity of thought and welcome new and different ideas in college but stand firm in my beliefs as I will meet people with all different kinds of beliefs and interests.
Last, my dad and I talked about his business and some of the new ETF's his company has released. It has been fun to gain knowledge and insight about the new products that were released. Through being able to learn about the investment world through my dad, I have become more interested in the different strategies they have in creating new products.
Philip, it's such a blessing to have someone in your life who holds value to family and God the way it seems your Dad has. It's great to have someone like that as an example because they not only show you a great way to live but they also can hold you accountable. I love seeing that y'all connect on my other levels like sports, politics and business. When you have a connection on a deeper level with someone you get so much more out of the relationship. You value their opinion, their critiques and their advice and feel these areas mean a great deal to you when they come from your dad.
ReplyDeleteDear Phil,
ReplyDeleteDads are the best. I think it is awesome that he is such a good role model for you in those two ways. I also know how it feels to have so very little faith in your favorite team to win. The Minnesota Vikings started off the season 5-0 then drifted into a terrible season and it was so hard for me to even watch their games. Good luck to your favorite team The Bulls. Phil, you're one cool dude. Some might even say "you're the man".
Love,
Max Gierke
Phil, I think it really awesome of you finding a mentor in your dad. I think that by having your father as your mentor, he is able to reach you and relate to you on a level different from that of just a random mentor. Also, having a mentor and father that has a career similar to the career area you are looking into seems really helpful! It seems like you have a really helpful relationship with your mentor/father.
ReplyDeleteHey Phil,
ReplyDeleteI really like what you said about always making sure to spend time with God and family. I find that those two things are always the most refreshing to me during busy seasons. I have an unfortunate habit of pushing those things away when times are busy since those are the times I need them most. Even now during finals season it's vital that I remember to always be reading my bible despite the stress of pressing exams.
Thanks for sharing!
