Finding a mentor can be quite a challenge, because the definition, mentor, holds a lot of responsibility. A mentor is someone of high respect and someone with whom one can easily learn from, whether from their mistakes or their success.
As of this past December, I gained a new sibling in the form of a brother in law. My sister married Corby Dodge, and whether I liked it or not, he became a part of the family (Spoiler: Corby is the best). Corby is around the age of my sister, so he is a few years older than me and has been building his career for a few years now. He comes from a small town in Iowa, but has found his home in Chicago working for Ogilvy & Mather as their Post Production Producer. For those of you who don't know, because I didn't until I asked him, Ogilvy & Mathers is an international advertising, marketing and public relations agency.
So why did you choose your brother in law to be your mentor for a class like principles of management? I'm glad you asked. Ever since I first met Corby, he has been nothing but hard working and dedicated to the work required for his job. His job requires him to work many late nights with consistent early mornings. He has to manage many people and make sure that their projects are being completed as fast and as well done as they can be. Not only does he work hard, he loves what he does, and he's really great at his job, even though he is too humble to admit it. Because he is so personable and understanding, he works well with his colleagues, which helps promote efficiency. These different exercises of managerial skills is what caused me to think of my new brother in law as the perfect mentor for this blog.
Oh Mel. This blog entry is awesome. I was waiting for you to post one and every time I checked to see if you had posted one it showed you had an incomplete draft, so thank you for finally completing it. Its pretty awesome that your brother in law is your mentor. I am curious, are you interested in public relations like Corby? If you are that'd be awesome you could pick his brain on all things public relations related. You speak pretty highly of him and am glad that you like the new member in your family. Its nifty how you tied in principles that are related to this class in what you saw your brother in law was carrying out in his own job. Keep up the good work Mel.
ReplyDeleteMel, a really great post about why you picked your brother in law for a mentor. It can be a great way to really get to know someone who you'll be spending a lot more time with and is someone who displays hard work. Cant wait to read the next post.
ReplyDeleteDear Mary Ellen,
ReplyDeleteThat is super unique to have your brother-in-law as your mentor. Not many people would be humble enough to allow that. But it is cool to see how a mentor will directly correlate to this class and help you.
Hey Mel!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear you were able to gain a new family member, but also one that can encourage you and give you advice as you begin to enter that same stage of life. Corby's work ethic as a young professional in the business field is probably indicative of what will be expected from us in our first jobs. I'm sure it's super helpful to see what is necessary for someone coming right out of college, working a first job to provide. Hopefully you can continue to capitalize on his experiences and glean advice on how to succeed as a recent college grad in the business world.
