Last week I met with my dad in his office. We talked a lot about this summer as I will be studying abroad for most the summer. He gave me advice on how to approach the summer abroad and to make the most of the opportunity. My dad also gave me advice on how to reach out to different people as I am seeking an internship next Fall. I spent time with him creating a well developed cover letter as well as resume. He taught me lot about what different companies look for and identify in a resume and cover letter. One of the things he stressed was having something on your resume that sets you apart from someone else. Something that people will remember when they hear your name.
In addition, we also talked about faith in politics. Politics these days is something several people tried to avoid but my dad encouraged me not to shy away from discussing politics. He talked about how to have a biblical perspective when discussing certain current issues and how to implement that when talking with other people.
We finished our meeting with talking about my career and what I eventually want to do. Currently, I do not know exactly what I want to do. He gave me some tips and pointers on how to figure out what career paths fit my strengths and interest. My dad encouraged me to reach out to friends of mine to see what they think I am good at and see if it aligns with what I believe that I am good at. To end our discussion we reviewed my school year and talked about the different ups and downs and how to prepare for my next year in college.
Phil,
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a really good relationship with your dad. That is awesome. Having a dad that will work with you on everything you need for your future is really encouraging. Many people do not have a dad to share a strong relationship with. As I was younger, I didn't always think my parents were right about everything and I wanted to just do things on my own. However, I have learned that we should listen to our fathers for advice and cherish every moment we have with them. We only get so many opportunities to speak with and learn from people.
This is really cool Phil.

Phil,
ReplyDeleteYour dad is really setting you up for success. If you follow through with all of these things and continue talking to your dad, you should have no problem finding an internship or job that you really enjoy.

Phil,
ReplyDeleteI think it's fantastic that you are asking feedback from others to get an outside perspective on your strengths and weaknesses. A lot of people waste their college experience by getting to a particular career path only to find out that it doesn't suit them. I really enjoyed reading your post.
