Hello friends,
Yesterday I met with the ole' boy himself, Doc Bacote. Instead of meeting luxuriously at a chipotle, Dr. Bacote suggested we meet at 7:15 (bright and early) inside Anderson Commons. I was thrilled to wake up half an hour earlier than normal to meet with my faithful friend. The conversation began with another classic basketball talk. We had talked about the tragedy of Aaron Hernandez's suicide for a few moments and we then talked about the new Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why. I would love to hear what you all have to say about this because it is a really popular series at the moment that speaks on the topic of suicide, rape, and cyber bullying. We always approach our conversations from a biblical perspective and it was really cool to examine suicide and other hard topics of today's world with him.
It has been another year and it doesn't seem like we will be finishing the book of Colossians, although Dr. Bacote told me to read the rest of it for the next time we meet. I think my mentor meetings with Bacote have really been enriched every since we started to dive into God's word. It is so cool to relate world news, pop culture, and our daily lives to the bible, and to see how relevant Colossians is to all of us to this day.
This blog experience has been really cool to share my thoughts with you all. I am thankful to have the opportunity to learn more about you all and about myself through writing down my experiences with Dr. Bacote. Thanks to all of you who tuned in and read what I had to say! I want to send a special shout out to Grant for making this blog posting experience full of life. I seriously can't stop laughing as I'm looking through some of our old comments and I also think that you are so wise, like a miniature Buddha. Cheers to you my friend!
Bud, we have had our fun, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading of your experience with your one of a kind mentor. Keep following and trusting in the Lord my brother, and enjoy the Cavs first round series win!
ReplyDeleteLuke, it has been exciting to see how you went through the mentor meetings this semester and the knowledge you have grown. I have watched 13 Reasons Why and find it a very interesting show with positives and negatives. Im glad that I have gotten to find out more about you and what you've learned.
ReplyDeleteLuke,
ReplyDeleteI hope you continue with your mentorship with Dr. Bacote these next couple of years. It seems like Dr. Bacote can balance out fun and current events with the important things going on in your life. We all need someone like this especially in the next couple of years. Also I have started watching the series 13 Reasons why, I am currently on the ninth episode and I am way to anxious to find how they wrap up the show! You and Grant better not spoil anything!

DeleteLuke Harrison Peters,
ReplyDeleteDr. Bacote challenges you which is awesome. I bet you drank some Starbucks coffee to wake up so early for your meeting. Thank you on the presentation about Starbucks by the way, it was quite pleasant. Also, I watched the 13 reasons why and the ending was very disappointing in my opinion. A lot of really hard and terrible things happened to Hannah Baker, and it is difficult to say this over a blog comment, but I think she should have made more of an effort to reach out for help. Let me know what you think.
Love,
Max Gierke
Luke,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear that you did not meet at Chipotle this time, but rather at saga at 7:15 in the morning. Once again I am inspired by your grit and willingness to sacrifice to improve yourself. I too have watched some of 13 reasons why (no spoilers please!!) and have found it to be deeply heart-wrenching, but also a very relevant and important show for many teens who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide. I have thoroughly enjoyed your blog posts, and I hope you can continue your incredible relationship with Dr. Bacote. He is a great man.
