Gierke Post 1

My mentor is my dad. He is an entrepreneur with his own fishing guide business Croixsippi, as well as his own environmental demolition inspection company. I set up a call with my dad recently after I had a recent opportunity to go to West Point for some summer training. We discussed the options and the pros and cons of going or not going. At first, I was not thrilled about spending another month of my summer training with the Army simply because last summer I attended Basic Camp and it was one of the worst months of my life. Then we researched Cadet Field Training at Camp Braddock and realized there wouldn't be drill sergeants there to make life miserable and I started to see the benefits of this training. He helped me to come to the conclusion that would ultimately result in the best for me, and that's one of the things I know will always be true with mentor meetings with my Father. I decided I would accept the training opportunity and spend my July training at West Point.  Here is a picture of my dad with a flathead catfish from the St. Croix river.

  1. Max,
That is really cool your dad is an entrepreneur. I really thought it was neat to see the first person you turned to for advice was your dad. Sometimes I find myself trying to make decisions by myself and think I know it all. But the fact you were humble enough to ask for advice and to listen is a cool testament of christ living in you. Also wow!!!!!!! that fish is huge!1

  3. Hello Maxwell,
Having someone to serve as your "sounding board" is incredibly helpful and I'm glad you have that in your Father. It's always helpful to get an independent opinion when there are major decisions that need to be made. You're a very disciplined young man and I'm sure you get that trait from your dad.
    Thanks for sharing,
    David

  4. Salutations Maxwell,

Thank you for sharing. I so appreciate you being honest with us about how you were initially not excited to go off to West Point for training. I think its a great thing that you reached out to your father, and with him processed the decision to give up a month of your summer. Its important to make decisions with those you love and I can see you greatly value your dad and his opinion. I hope you have a fruitful time of training at West Point!

That picture is fantastic. Wow, that's a massive fish. Like some of the others, its very cool to hear about how your Dad is helping you navigate future decisions about careers and other life choices during your time at Wheaton and also all the advice that I'm sure he gives you about your time after you graduate. Keep up the good work!
