#1

Over the past year I have been meeting with a mentor every few weeks. Mitch, who is a teammate of mine on the Football team here at Wheaton is also a sophomore and reached out to me at the end of my freshman year asking me to get lunch sometime. After our lunch together, I asked him if he would mentor me in my spiritual life and on my walk with Jesus.

My freshmen year at Wheaton was pretty difficult, my ultimate reason for coming here was to play college football and I didn't really think much of the Christian community and religious aspect of the school. When I arrived on campus I immediately felt distant and like I couldn't relate to many of my teammates and peers. I felt behind and out of place... I lacked much of the basic foundational knowledge of the Bible that most all students at Wheaton have, My personal relationship with Jesus was very weak if I had one at all.

Mitch reaching out to me for lunch was very comforting and calming, as we talked about our backgrounds and really got to know each other on a deeper level than simply teammates. I asked Mitch to mentor me because it was immediately obvious that Jesus was at the center of his life and everything that he did. He had much more extensive knowledge of the Bible than I and a great relationship with Christ.  Since that first meeting, I have built a strong great personal relationship with Jesus and have started to truly understand the Bible and the love that God has for us. I am excited to continue meeting with Mitch and building a deeper relationship with Him but more importantly building a deeper relationship with Jesus and to continue unpacking the word of God and keeping each other accountable in living by his word.

  1. Hey Mason, it is awesome that you were able to find a teammate that could mentor you. It sounds like he is a cool guy. It is sweet to see how your time at Wheaton and being with the football team has helped you grow more towards Jesus.

  2. Rooster,

It is true, I think, that for the vast majority of those of us on the football team, we would not be here at Wheaton if it weren't for football. Whatever the reason is that makes that true for each of us, God used football to draw us here to Wheaton. I've seen change in you since you showed up on campus as a freshman and I'm glad Mitch has been able to help with that.

  3. Mason,
It is really great that Mitch reached out to you and has challenged and pushed you spiritually. I am pretty good friends with Mitch, so I think you should continue your relationship with Mitch. He will guide you in the right direction.
    Thanks, Kobe

  4. Mason,
My idea of a mentor is that they have to be significantly older than you. But reading this I have been wrong in my thinking. through reading this I now believe it can be a fellow brother in age. Just I think a mentor is someone who is more mature in faith that can help point you to Christ daily. Thank you for sharing this Mason.
